Yesterday Lee and I signed up for a Barbara Barrington Jones seminar that normally would have cost $800 each, but since he is a BYU-H student we get to go for $5.00--ah, the perks of poverty :o) The seminar is focused on how to make the transition from college to the "real working world". I find it a bit ironic that I am fleeing the "real world" to return to "academia" but it should be interesting never the less.

It is cold and raining this morning. I was looking forward to spending the day outside of our room, but now it appears that Lee will be reading all day and I will have to find a way to entertain myself--not one of the perks of student poverty :o(

One last note--aka What Was I Thinking?--when I first arrived in Laie trying to establish our kitchen I went into total sticker shock! I was shopping for basic herbs and spices. To my horror the smallest container, less than 1 ounce, was priced at $6.00 and up depending on the herb or spice. I decided to surf the web thinking that even with shipping I should be able to find something less expensive. I found San Francisco Herb Shop and I liked their prices, not to mention that they were on the west coast so shipping should not take too long. I made my order of about 35 different herbs, spices, and baking supplies. The shipping still took nearly 2 weeks, but imagine my surprise when the box we received weighed nearly 40 pounds. I was expecting a smallish box because I thought that my order was for 4 ounces, maybe a little more, for each item. Well I opened the delightfully fragrant box and discovered that the majority of my herbs were in 1 pound packages. Have you any idea how much parsley is in a 1 pound package? The quality is top notch and I still spent less on my purchase than I would have buying locally--but golly, what do I do with 40 pounds of herbs and spices? I've decided to share, it will save my friends and neighbors a bit on their grocery budget as well. I've kept enough for my year's supply, now I can move on to storing something to put the herbs and spices on. It is too funny, and just goes to show that you learn something new everyday even when you are past the half-century mark.

At least everything you eat will be very well spiced. How much is a pound of parsley?

That's a funny story. I'm glad we have it in writing! That must have been such a surprise! Cold rain sounds good. We still haven't gotten much of it yet. We had a few cloudy days, but no rain. Bummer.
Love you,
Lisa
